How to Avoid Camping Disasters With a Little Planning
The warm weather has seen a rise in visitors to the camping shop at Frensham Garden Centre, and we really can’t blame anyone! Some of the stuffy nights we’ve had to endure has had a number of us dreaming about camping, and how nice and cool it must be to sleep outside in a tent! But before we all go running to the nearest campsite, we thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone of some good preparations to make before setting off on such a holiday. Camping can feel a lot more spontaneous than other holidays, but this doesn’t mean that a certain amount of forethought isn’t required! Some good things to remember this year for all you happy campers out there include….
Test Equipment Beforehand
It’s always a good idea to pitch tent before you actually leave, not only as practice but to check for any damage present; after all, you don’t want to notice any holes or broken poles when you’re putting up your tent at the campsite! Anything else that you’ll be relying on during your trip for any reason should be tested beforehand as well, including gas stoves, sleeping bags, and anything with batteries – if you’re not sure how much charge they have left, it’s best to replace them before you go (or take spares) rather than get caught short.
Don’t count on the weather being entirely hot or rainy as it could switch at any moment, and you don’t want to be left overheated or soaked and chilled to the bone. Pack for a variety of weather possibilities as it’s highly likely you’ll need clothes to keep you cool as much as you’ll need blankets, fleeces and waterproofs. Remembering to take appropriate footwear can also help to avoid blisters or wet feet (and a miserable time!).
In a similar vein, there might be some days where despite what you’ve packed, it’s simply too scorching or wet to venture outside like you wanted to. For times like this, some other forms of entertainment are needed, like board games, cards, or even activity books. You may not be getting to hike the country trail you wanted to, but at least you’ll be able to get some good quality time in with your family one way or another.
Remember the Little Things
It’s easy to get wrapped up in making sure you have the right tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags that you might end up forgetting about other smaller – but no less important – things. Light sources like torches and lanterns are often forgotten, but having these with you can really make all the difference. Likewise, first aid kits, maps, tissue paper and medication are things that are really best not left behind – make a list to check off if you think these vital things might slip your mind when packing!
